Notice for the 5th Lecture Class for the Classification of Drosophila

BioResource Project “Drosophila” held four lecture classes for the classification of Drosophila from November 2002 to August 2004. We will hold the advanced course as the 5th lecture class for the classification of Drosophila. It is for those who attended the lecture class for the beginners or have experience of classification. We hope many people will apply for this. Thank you.

The aim of lecture:
To identify more than 30 species of Drosophila including allied species found in Japan.

If you are interested in a specific species and would like to selectively identify its allied species, please feel free to ask us when you apply. We will make an arrangement regarding your request as much as possible.
For further information and list of the species used in the lecture, please visit our website:

Notice for 4th Lecture Class of the classification of Drosophila

Not only Drosophila melanogaster that are popular to use in the research, but also the other kinds of Drosophila is significant as a research material because its distinctive characteristics are precious for genetic resource. We would like to hold the 4th lecture class of the classification of Drosophila as a part of National BioResource Project. The target applicants will be those who provide for research using Drosophila, aim to classify Drosophila and are the researchers of Drosophila melanogaster. It will be the first time to hold the workshop in Tokyo, which will be the last one for beginner course.
At the same time, we are happy to announce that we are planning to hold the advanced course workshop in Kyoto from 31 October to 2 November.

3rd Lecture class for the classification of Drosophila

Notice for 3rd Lecture class for the classification of Drosophila

The lecture classes for the classification of Drosophila for beginners were held in November 2002 and August 2003.
We would like to take this opportunity to announce that we will organize the advanced course for those who attended the 1st or 2nd workshop or experienced classification of Drosophila. We welcome your participation. Thank you.

Purpose of this lecture class: To classify more than 30 species of Family Drosophilidae found in Japan.

If you are interested in the specific species and would like to learn how to classify their allied species intensively, please let us know when you apply. We will make an arrangement for you as much as possible.

Please find out the species and their affinity that are used in the workshop on the website of Drosophila Genetic Resource Center:

Notice for 2nd Lecture class for the classification of Drosophila

Several kinds of Drosophila including Drosophila melanogaster are regarded as significant research materials in terms of genetic resource due to their unique features and phenomena. We will organize the lecture class for species classification for those who aim to pioneer a new field by using Drosophila or pursue taxonomy in the future. The lecture class will be held as a part of National BioResource Project for this fiscal year. We regret that because the number of applicants exceeded the quota, we rejected some of application last year. For this fiscal year, we will hold 2 workshops: one is similar to the 1st lecture class for beginners in terms of classification of Drosophila from 23 to 25 August. And the other is advanced course for those who already experienced classification in November. In the class for beginners, we are planning to carry out the lecture, collection and classification of Japanese Drosophila. On the other hand, in the advanced course, we are planning to narrow down a target. We would like to take this opportunity to announce the lecture class for beginners.

Notice for 1st Lecture class for the classification of Drosophila Vol. 2

We announced –1st Lecture class for the classification of Drosophila– on the website of Drosophila Genetic Resource Center, Jfly and evolve on 24 September 2002. We had 19 applications by the designated deadline of midnight on 13 October. We selected 10 participants as originally planned due to the capacity of venue and contents of the lecture. The criterion for selection is a participant per research laboratory and those who can take part in the lecture throughout 3 days. Consequently, those who listed below will participate in the lecture. We regret that many applications were rejected due to the capacity. As we are setting about a similar project in the next fiscal year, we welcome your participation for the next time. Thank you.

Notice for 1st Lecture class for the classification of Drosophila

Various strains of Drosophila melanogaster, which have been developed by researchers for 90 years, are used in the several fields. Other kinds of Drosophila also have the potential to become significant research materials as valuable genetic resource due to their unique features and phenomena. We planned to organize the lecture class for classification for those who aim to research with untapped materials, or aspire to study biology or taxonomy. It includes the lecture, collection and classification for especially Japanese Drosophila in this fiscal year. We welcome your participation. Thank you.
