Basic research on the neurobiology of memory formation in several experimental systems has revealed a remarkably conserved process at both the molecular and cellular levels. Biochemically, memory formation can be “genetically dissected” into distinct temporal phases from initial acquisition through memory consolidation. Cellularly, a new experience first is represented by a persistent neural activity. With time, however, this neural activity drives restructuring of synaptic connections in a subset of the underlying circuitry. This synaptic plasticity is the cellular underpinning of memory consolidation and likely represents Lashley’s engram. In all systems studied to date, the CREB transcription factor appears to act as a molecular switch to commit a neuron undergo long-lasting synaptic change. Genetic or pharmacological modulation of the CREB pathway has been shown to enhance memory by reducing the amount of repetition required for consolidation in fruit flies, mice, rats and monkeys. Surprisingly, genetic studies in fruit flies also have established that fly homologs of human genes involved in six different forms of mental retardation all participate in the biochemistry of memory formation. This observation presages that several, if not many, forms of mental retardation will be amenable to small-molecule therapies. |

京都工芸繊維大学遺伝資源キュレーター教育研究センターで行っている大学院向け科目「モデル生物遺伝資源学実習および演習Ｉ」においてニコンインステック（株）のご協力を得て、「公開光学顕微鏡講義」を開催します。 光学顕微鏡、位相差顕微鏡、微分干渉顕微鏡、蛍光顕微鏡、そして共焦点レーザー顕微鏡、それぞれの原理について基礎から応用まで、実際の利用におけるノウハウを含めてじっくり講義してもらいます。さらに超解像顕微鏡など最新の顕微鏡技術の動向についてもお話し頂く予定です。 顕微鏡は日常的に使っていながら、その原理について正式に学ぶ機会が少ない機器と思います。また、技術の進展に伴い顕微鏡自体も進化していて、正しく使いこなすにはそれなりの知識が必要となってきています。 この機会に京都嵯峨野の地まで足をお運びになり、顕微鏡の基礎を復習する機会にされては如何でしょうか？ 学生の教育の場としても最適と思います。 事前申し込み不要、無料です。多数の参加お待ちしています。 |
